Loki was my favorite character in the Thor film, and they did a great job with him in the Avengers. He may surpass Magneto as my favorite film villain of all time. Someone remind me to pick up a few more issues of his comic book (Journey Into Mystery), I really enjoyed the few that I read.

As an aside, I’m getting a kick from all of the trends that Avengers has started. In addition to the quim line, sales are up 80% on shawarma at one restaurant in Los Angeles, thanks to Stark’s mention of the dish in the film.

I was listening to KSFM 102.5 on the way to work this morning when they announced that Jay (a member of the morning show crew) was going to name his daughter Kara Zor-El. I thought, “That can’t be right?” Well, I looked it up online, and I’ll be dammed if it is. I was going to call in to tell them that Kara Zor-El is Supergirl’s real name, but apparently he and his wife (?) knew that when they picked it.
I would have never thought about naming a daughter Kara Zor-El, but I have to admit that it’s a pretty flippin’ cool name. It’s less odd sounding than Kal-El (which is what I wanted to name a future son at one point).

My girlfriend has wanted to watch the Hunger Games movie after seeing the trailer, and I suggested that we read the book first. She’s a faster reader than I and finished reading the entire trilogy before i picked up the first book.
So today I finally started reading, and I am dreaded by what I have gotten through so far. My girlfriend asked if my ill look was due to the morbid nature of the book, and I explained that I felt sick because the story so far sounds incredible similar to one that I have been planning to write since I was in High School. “It’s my story!” I exclaimed.
“No it’s not, because you never got around to writing it.” And she was right.
So far, the concept of a gate limiting the areas that a segregated lower class was allowed to enter is key for one of the opening scenes in the story that I had been planning. Another Key concept that I wanted to use was a competition that is used to quell a people from uprising. Granted, I applied the concepts differently and I didn’t intend to use the old teenagers-forced-to-fight-to-the-death concept that was stolen straight out of the manga Battle Royale, but the fact that there are such strong structural similarities to my story in only the first chapter gets my stomach queasy. I will have to follow up this post when I get further into the book.

I finally saw the movie last night. My girlfriend and I absolutely loved it, and we wondered if Holly Golightly would be recognizable enough of a character to make a Halloween costume. Of course, I don’t know if “slutty Holly” would have as much appeal as the original. Anyway, I can’t wait to read the novella, knowing that Truman Capote didn’t approve of the movie.

I haven’t had time lately for reviews, but after reading such a great issue of Savage Dragon, I thought that I should briefly give some shot outs.

Savage Dragon #175

Lately, I have not been a fan of the coloring on this book (as anyone who has talked to me in a comic shop knows). Ruben Rude did such an amazing, consistent job for such a long time on this title, that I felt the quality took a dive during the period after. There is something about color that can give a book a polished feel, even if the color is very basic and flat. Issue #175 took a huge step in the right direction, as this book felt solidly grounded once again. Even though Erik has maintained the same level of quality ever since the Dragon returned monthly, there was always something lacking in the art that didn’t quite touch the output from the days of old. Maybe it’s the maturation of Erik’s style, as he moves in the simplistic, raw direction that so many other seasoned legends such a David Mazzucchelli and Frank Miller have headed in.
I won’t post much about the story, because it’s some exciting stuff that is best left to speak for itself. None-the-less, it’s flat out fun to see something fresh and new in these pages. And after all that’s happened in this book, it’s increasingly difficult to do “fresh and new” with the Dragon.
No review of this book would be complete without mentioning the three awesome back-up tales. One of the best parts about purchasing a Dragon comic is the back-up material that comes with it. Dragon has always had the feeling of a “comic magazine” more than a typical “comic book” does because of all the bonus features. You get a letter page, pin-ups, comic strips and back-up stories. Issue #175 delivers a healthy dose of these (being an milestone issue), and in my option they are just as much fun as the lead story is.
If that isn’t enough to convince anyone reading this to buy this issue (it works well as a jump-in point, or even a give-it-a-try point), then there is always the fact that it’s 48 pages long for only $4. That’s over twice the length of a $4 Marvel book. Go for it, you’ll thank me when you do.
